A global manufacturer partnered with SHI to simplify device procurement and streamline their worldwide IT operations.

Challenge:

A global leader in security solutions with a heritage spanning centuries, our customer manages a complex IT environment that supports over 12,000 employees and a portfolio of more than 30 brands across 120 countries. With nearly $4 billion in revenue, their products include everything from residential and commercial door hardware to workforce productivity systems.

As a mature organization with an established IT asset management (ITAM) practice, they were seeking a trusted managed service provider with a proven track record to support continuous compliance and optimization of their Microsoft estate. They needed a partner that could not only maintain a high standard of ongoing software asset management (SAM) but also provide actionable insights to further reduce risk, improve governance, and enhance cost efficiency. At the same time, they were exploring broader opportunities to streamline procurement and align their hardware asset management efforts with software rationalization initiatives.

Solution:

SHI has supported this customer since 2017, building a longstanding relationship rooted in trust and results. Through its Managed Service for Microsoft environments, SHI provides continuous compliance monitoring and optimization across both on-premise and cloud-based assets. The service involves automated inventory discovery and data validation, eliminating inconsistencies and providing a reliable view of all entitlements, deployments, and usage. This trusted data foundation is coupled with expert analysis to uncover risks, highlight optimization opportunities, and support decision-making. SHI’s License Consultants deliver governance reporting, manage license positions, and prepare the customer for renewals with strategic guidance backed by verified ITAM data.

A collaborative cadence of weekly meetings and quarterly reconciliation sessions ensures that all SAM lifecycle needs are addressed — from initial provisioning to deprovisioning and re-harvesting. This partnership empowers the customer to proactively manage their IT investments, reduce compliance exposure, and make informed business and technology decisions.

Outcome:

This customer has realized savings and compliance improvements that significantly exceed the cost of the service — achieving a return of 1,118% in 2024 alone. SHI helped remediate $1.079 million in SQL Server risk by recommending a review of Active/Passive configurations and validating installed components. An additional $17,000 in Core Infrastructure Suite risk was addressed by advising a rightsizing strategy for future deprovisioning.

SHI’s proactive guidance not only resolved licensing issues but also positioned the customer to optimize future maintenance contracts. Further recommendations under review, particularly around Visual Studio, are projected to yield a 361% return in 2025. The customer’s Director of Business Transformation, who oversees Software Asset Management, remains a valued contributor to SHI’s ITAM Customer Advisory Board — a testament to the ongoing collaboration and strategic alignment between both organizations. As one customer contact put it, “We always get timely support, assistance, and answers from the SHI team. Every member that I have worked with has been helpful and fun to work with.”
