Challenge:
A prominent player in the healthcare communications and marketing sector encountered several significant challenges in managing their AWS environment. These challenges included the need to automate infrastructure deployments, establish robust disaster recovery plans, secure their Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), and implement stringent data encryption policies. Addressing these issues was crucial to avoid operational inefficiencies, extended downtimes during disasters, and potential security vulnerabilities that could jeopardize sensitive healthcare data. They turned to SHI, an AWS Advanced Consulting Partner.
Solution:
SHI provided a comprehensive solution tailored to the customer’s needs, leveraging our deep expertise in cloud operations and AWS best practices.
To streamline infrastructure management, SHI implemented infrastructure-as-code (IaC) using AWS CloudFormation and the AWS CLI. This automation ensured consistent deployments and reduced the likelihood of manual errors. Additionally, SHI set up a CI/CD pipeline with AWS CodePipeline and AWS CodeBuild, facilitating continuous integration and delivery of updates.
Working closely with the customer, SHI established a disaster recovery (DR) plan customized to their operational requirements. This involved defining Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) to minimize downtime and data loss during incidents. The DR plan included automated backups, failover strategies, and regular recovery drills to ensure preparedness.
To bolster network security, SHI implemented best practices for VPC configuration. This included setting up security groups to control traffic flow, configuring Network Access Control Lists (ACLs) for subnet-level traffic filtering, and leveraging AWS security services such as AWS WAF and AWS Shield for additional protection.
Data security was a top priority for the customer. SHI implemented robust data encryption policies to safeguard data both at rest and in transit. AWS Key Management Service (KMS) was used to securely manage encryption keys, and TLS/SSL was employed to encrypt data transmitted over the internet.

The automated deployment processes minimized manual intervention, reducing the risk of errors and ensuring consistent infrastructure setups. The CI/CD pipeline enabled seamless integration and deployment of updates, accelerating development cycles. Best practices for VPC configuration and the use of AWS security services enhanced the overall security posture.
